site.btaUPDATED PM Petkov: Dialogue With Socialist Party Continues
Outgoing Prime Minister Kiril Petkov said that the dialogue with the Socialists continues after holding a meeting with representatives of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) in Parliament Thursday.
The topic of the conversation, which was also attended by the BSP leader and outgoing Deputy Prime Minister Korneliya Ninova, was the expulsion of 70 Russian diplomats from Bulgaria.
After the talks, Petkov once again denied the allegation of making a one-man decision. He said that the issue was addressed back in March and there are several reports from different security services since then.
"This gave a feeling to our BSP partners that the entire institutional machine has been working on this issue for a long time," Petkov said, adding that the only mistake that he may have made was how the events were presented.
On Wednesday, Ninova announced that BSP is withdrawing from the talks with the Continue the Change party on the possible formation of a new government. The party described the decision to expel 70 Russian diplomats as unprecedented in Bulgaria's history.
According to Petkov, any government would have made the same decision in the presence of such information. He said that in order to have political stability in the country, the information reported by the security services cannot be ignored.
Petkov also stressed that the focus right now should not be shifted from the economic situation and the corruption issues in Bulgaria.
Ninova told journalists that her party was familiarized with the steps preceding the expulsion of the diplomats, however, BSP does not change its position on the formation of a new government. The Socialists are ready to return to the negotiating table if Continue the Change nominate a candidate for prime minister other than Kiril Petkov, Ninova said.
