Over 1,380 birds from 45 species have been ringed in the first week of the Ornithological Ringing Camp by Durankulak Lake, the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences said on its Facebook page.

The camp began on August 14 at the Durankulak Lake protected area and will continue until November.

Volunteers and donations are the main driving forces of the camp, supplying the aluminium rings (bands) and the special pliers for their application on the legs of the birds (or removal); digital scales and wing rulers and leg gauges; mist nets and shelves; fuel for transporting volunteers, ringing volunteers and people in charge of the shifts at the camp throughout the field work period, as well as food.

The ringing camp is organized jointly by NMNH and the Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystems at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the latter’s Bulgarian Ornithological Centre, the LE Balkan Foundation, Branta Birding Lodge & Conservation Centre and Patrick Bergkamp, a lifelong ringer from the Netherlands.
