site.btaE-Government Ministry: 26% of Internet Traffic Is Malicious

According to data provided to BTA by the Ministry of e-Government, 26% of all internet traffic is malicious bot traffic generated by programs.

Data shows that 80% of all reported online incidents are phishing attacks. Phishing is an attack using disguised emails, direct messages or websites that mimic real ones and aim to extract sensitive information and access to important accounts and information of their victims. A total of 57% of all organizations are subjected to daily and weekly phishing attack attempts. 

Ransomware attacks are another common problem. Ransomware a type of malware from cryptovirology that threatens to publish the victim's personal data or permanently block access to it unless a ransom is paid. 

The number of alerts processed by the National Centre for Incident Response in Information Security (CERT) for breaches in the Bulgarian internet space were 657 in June, 272 in July and 249 in August 2022. The number of alerts registered on their website for the same months were 120, 145 and 155 respectively, while the affected IP addresses in the alerts were 10,382 in June, 14,634 in July and 14,298 in August. 

At a press conference on Tuesday dedicated to the European Cyber Security Month, caretaker e-Government Minister Georgi Todorov said that Bulgaria would participate in the 10th edition of the initiative by validating a postage stamp dedicated to the topic. 

Todorov added that in the era of digitalization the public administration and all state institutions, businesses and citizens ought to pay more attention to personal and institutional cyber security. In his view, the role of the State is very important as progress implies protection.
