site.btaAgriculture Minister: Parts of Kapitan Andreevo Border Checkpoint to Be Declared National Security Site
A Council of Ministers decision is in the works to declare parts of the Kapitan Andreevo border control checkpoint a national security site, caretaker Agriculture and Food Minister Yavor Gechev said on bTV's morning show. The Finance Minister has approved the allocation of BGN 6.5 million for a public procurement procedure to equip a state laboratory there, he also said.
The border crossing is working normally, the phyto-sanitary control is exercised by the State only, he noted.
Commenting on Wednesday's dismissal of Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) Executive Director Hristo Daskalov, Gechev said it is not related to Kapitan Andreevo. Daskalov was removed from office over a violation of the election legislation; he dismissed several BFSA employees and appointed others in their places.
Later on the morning show, Daskalov commented that he had been dismissed exactly in relation to the border control checkpoint. "Someone has misled Minister Gechev, no employees have been fired; there were some who were transferred to another structure. That is done in every institution on a daily basis. No people outside of the BFSA have been appointed either," he said.
While Daskalov was head of the BFSA, the agency took over from private company Eurolab 2011 the phyto-sanitary control over third-country imports. The private company's contract got terminated by the government of Kiril Petkov in late May over suspicions that the contractor was covering up imports that did not meet the standards and failing to report to the Exchequer its income from fees charged for its services.
