The position of the Netherlands on Bulgaria’s accession to Schengen is disappointing, said caretaker Deputy Prime Minister for EU Funds Management Atanas Pekanov on Friday during a briefing at the Council of Ministers. He was commenting on a resolution of the Dutch Parliament, according to which the country should not vote in favour of Bulgaria and Romania's accession to the Schengen Area.
"Bulgaria has been meeting the technical criteria for Schengen entry for eleven years. I believe we have made all the necessary steps to make this happen. Sometimes, in other countries, such decisions fall victim to internal political discussions and conflicts," Pekanov said.
He described as worrying the developments in Bulgaria’s newly elected 48th National Assembly, which for the third day in a row has been unable to elect its chairperson and work on the adoption of the necessary bills related to the Recovery and Resilience Plan and the country's budget for next year.
