Bulgaria participated with three teams in the International Online Chess Tournament for prison inmates organized by the Sheriff of Cook County, Illinois, Thomas J. Dart, Bulgarian Consul in Chicago Svetoslav Stankov told BTA.

The participants in the Bulgarian teams were inmates from the prisons in Bobov Dol, Burgas, Varna, Vratsa, Pleven, Pazardjik, Plovdiv, and Sofia.

Teams from 46 countries took part in the online chess tournament. Bulgaria placed eighth after wins against Mongolia, Croatia and Zimbabwe.

Stankov said he learned about Sheriff Dart's online chess competition for prison inmates more than a year ago and has since thought how Bulgaria can participate. The consul said that the officials from the Directorate General for Implementation of Penalties, whose work enabled the Bulgarian participation, did a perfect job and exceeded his expectations.
