Bulgarian National Assembly Chair Vezhdi Rashidov proposes a meeting of the heads of parliament of Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia with their counterparts of the Netherlands and Austria, Bulgaria's Parliament said in a press release on Tuesday.
The purpose of the meeting is to brief the top Dutch and Austrian lawmakers on the three countries' efforts and readiness for accession to the Schengen area.
Rashidov made the proposal during a bilateral meeting with Croatian Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandrokovic in Strasbourg, where the two attended a ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the European Parliament.
At his session with his Croatian counterpart, Rashidov stressed that Bulgaria has long fulfilled all conditions for membership of the Schengen area, which has been established repeatedly by the European Commission and the European Parliament. "Bulgaria is an honest and loyal EU Member State. It is not right that additional political requirements, which have not been set to other countries before us, should be set to our country," the National Assembly Chair argued.
In conclusion, Rashidov reiterated his reservations about a possible decoupling of Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia at the Justice and Home Affairs Council due in early December.
