The reasons why Bulgaria and Romania are not admitted to the border-free Schengen Area are purely economic, Bulgarian MEP Angel Dzhambazki said in Strasbourg, speaking to Bulgarian reporters. "It is ridiculous and mendacious to have people, countries or governments that do not control their own territory, to speak about security and corruption. I mean the Netherlands and Sweden," Dzhambazki said. In his words, corruption exists everywhere.
"The reasons why Bulgaria and Romania are not part of the Schengen Area are purely economic. This is the interest of their transport sector which does not want a rival in the face of our transport sector. These people have one goal, and it is for the business to relocate and pay taxes in Western Europe," Dzhambazki said.
"I doubt it that in the foreseeable future Bulgaria will be admitted to the Schengen Area. It is not true that only the Netherlands is stopping Bulgaria. This will not happen without a tacit agreement with other member states," Dzhambazki, adding that Romania may be admitted while Bulgaria may be left out.
