Petar Vitanov MEP told reporters in Strasbourg on Wednesday that, in his opinion, Bulgaria, Romania, and Croatia will not be admitted into the Schengen Area. Vitanov said that there were discussions about preparations for the separation of Bulgaria from the other two countries.

"Some member states are speculating with [this approach], while many others disagree, as there are no grounds for it," said the MEP. He stated that a potential separation of Bulgaria would be an extremely negative option and a political humiliation for the country. "There are no legal, technical or political reasons why there should be any separation between us and the other two Schengen candidate countries," Vitanov said.

He explained that currently Bulgaria is a burden to the other candidates, because "we have no government, no one to make commitments in the medium and long term". This makes Bulgaria a convenient target to be "ignored and humiliated".

Vitanov believes that the big political formations in Bulgaria do not want the country to be in Schengen, so as not to make a gift to President Rumen Radev.

The MEP believes that a better result can be achieved through a collective mobilization of both the public, the political parties and the government in Bulgaria.

"A legal analysis is needed on whether a separation could happen purely legally. The reason is that the European Parliament and the European Commission have taken a decision on the admission of Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen," Vitanov concluded.
