site.btaBulgaria Leads in Conservation of Lesser Spotted Eagle in Europe - Environmentalist
Seventeen new nests of lesser spotted eagles were discovered in Bulgaria this year, bringing the total to 164, Vanya Ratarova, Project Coordinator of the "Life for Eagle's Habitats" project said on Thursday. According to Ratarova, this ranks Bulgaria among the top countries in Europe in terms of preserving the species.
Yugoiztochno Darzhavno Predpriyatie [Southeast State Enterprise] - Sliven, which is a partner of the project, reported that a meeting of the committee is being held at the State Forestry Enterprise - Nova Zagora from November 23 to 25.
Five trail cameras have taken nearly 142,000 photos to help ornithologists learn more about the species, its feeding and breeding. Transmitters were placed on ten birds to monitor their migration.
Part of the project is training hunters on the conservation of the protected eagle.
The main goal of the project, funded under the EU LIFE programme, is long-term conservation of the lesser spotted eagle population through protection and sustainable management of the species' breeding and foraging habitats, as well as creation of new ones.
