The National Statistical Institute (NSI) will receive an additional BGN 1,848,000 to adapt its information systems to the euro, the government decided at its meeting on Wednesday, approving additional spending in the NSI's budget for 2022. The funds will also be used for information security.

The introduction of the euro will affect all NSI information systems that handle currency units and process financial information. In order to ensure continuity in the statistical production process, systems need to be adapted or upgraded to accept and process information in both BGN and EUR. It is also necessary to create the possibility for the systems to revalue static data going back years so that there is no break in the statistical series and distortion of information. This also applies to electronic services. Further modernisation is also needed in order to achieve a higher level of information security protection.

Eleven information systems will be adapted and integrated. To ensure stability and resilience as well as a highly functional and secure environment, seven new servers and software will be purchased and implemented to manage the virtualisation environment in the NSI data centre. The digitisation centre using a robotic scanner will also be upgraded.

The government's decision is linked to the implementation of the National Plan for the introduction of the euro in the Republic of Bulgaria and information security requirements.
