A committee is planned to be formed at a meeting in Sofia on November 5 to initiate a referendum against the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria, it emerged from a BTA-hosted news conference on Tuesday.
"All parliamentary parties, all vigilant Bulgarian citizens, as well as President Rumen Radev, will be invited to that meeting in writing," said civic activist Rosen Milenov. He specified that holding the referendum requires the collection of 400,000 signatures within three months.
"Entering the eurozone implies crossing out everything for which we have been working for so long and the Finance Ministry incurring, on our behalf, a debt that the next generation will have to repay. This is happening to fringe countries like Greece, Portugal and Spain," Assoc. Prof. Grigor Sariyski said at Tuesday's news conference.
The economist argued that a fateful decision such as the euro changeover cannot be entrusted to the hands of 240 persons who are unable even to elect a chair. He was referring to the incumbent 48th National Assembly. "The people is the decision-maker in a democratic society, which is precisely why we want to ask the people by this referendum whether it wants Bulgaria to join the eurozone and when," Sariyski pointed out.
In his opinion, a working economy rather than entry into the eurozone is key to an increase of incomes. "As soon as we enter the eurozone, the only thing that will happen will be that we will have to pay membership dues to the so-called 'club of the rich'. This happens to each country which is unprepared to enter the eurozone like, say, Slovakia," he added.
Sariyski specified that the purpose of the referendum is to consult the people on whether the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria should be deferred and not on whether it should be introduced or not at all.
