At a meeting here on Thursday, Bulgarian caretaker Youth and Sports Minister Vessela Lecheva and Hungarian Secretary of State for Sports Adam Schmidt agreed on the signing of a memorandum in the area of sport, Lecheva's Ministry said in a press release. The document will be signed during a visit of Schmidt to Sofia, until which the teams will be working on specific proposals.

Lecheva and Schmidt talked for over an hour about the funding of Bulgarian and Hungarian sport, the development of infrastructure, and the criteria for assessing the development of sport in their countries.

Schmidt said that in Hungary pupils have one physical education class every day. The state has set clear criteria for evaluating the successes of every single sports federation, taking the social role into account as well.

Lecheva said that Hungary has serious traditions and successes in sports such as swimming, kayaking and many others, and it would be useful for the two countries to share experience. Her counterpart too believes that the bilateral cooperation will lead to specific results.

On the last day of her two-day working visit to Hungary, Lecheva and the delegation led by her also met with Hungarian Olympic Committee Secretary General Laszlo Fabian, Sports Director Csaba Barta, and International Olympic Committee member Daniel Gyurta. They discussed the Committee's role in the preparation for the Olympics.

The hosts said they hold meetings with the sports federations ever six months to check their readiness for forthcoming competitions. Budapest has not given up on its plans to apply for hosting the Summer Olympic Games; it has nearly 90% of the necessary facilities ready.

On Wednesday, Minister Lecheva visited the modern sports facilities built in the last years in Budapest: Hungary's national stadium Puskas Arena, the Duna Arena aquatics complex, and the training centre of the Hungarian national football team.
