Customs officers seized 10.7 kg of cocaine hidden in a truck with dog food in the vicinity of the Vidin-Calafat Bridge (formerly known as Danube Bridge 2), the Customs Agency said on Tuesday.
On July 24, at around 11:11 pm in the area of the Vidin-Calafat border crossing checkpoint, customs inspectors stopped for inspection a refrigerated truck traveling from France to Turkey. The driver declared that he was carrying dog food.
However, in the course of the inspection, the customs officers found a total of 10 packages wrapped with duct tape in a cavity between two pipes under the spoiler of the cab. Upon opening one of the packages, they detected the presence of a white powdery substance, which a field test identified as cocaine.
The total amount of cocaine detected and seized by customs officers was 10,712.09 grams.
Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated in the case.
The driver of the truck was charged with illegal transportation of cocaine across the border. He was detained for up to 72 hours by a prosecutor's order. A request for remand in custody against the accused is to be submitted to the court.
The investigation continues under the supervision of the Vidin District Prosecutor's Office.
