Nearly 2 kg of gold jewels worth over BGN 249,500 were seized by Bulgarian customs officers at the Kapitan Andreevo Checkpoint on Bulgaria's border with Turkey. The contraband jewels were found on August 7 in a car bound from Turkey for Germany. The 22-carat gold chain, bracelets and necklaces were stashed in a suitcase full of clothes.
The contraband jewels were impounded, and pretrial proceedings are in progress.
The Haskovo District Prosecution Office has charged the 43-year-old driver, who is a German national. He has been released on BGN 5,000 bail and is barred from leaving Bulgaria except by permission of the prosecution service.
In the first week of August, customs officers at Kapitan Andreevo seized over 10 kg of gold jewels and 1.5 kg of silver jewels worth over BGN 960,000.
