Burgas Mayor Dimiter Nikolov said that news about culture and sports in the Balkan countries should be covered more. "Let there be less mentions of the words crisis and war," Nikolov said on Monday, speaking during the 30th General Assembly of the Association of the Balkan News Agencies - Southeast Europe (ABNA-SE) taking place in Burgas and hosted by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA).
Nikolov said that the work of journalists is very important. In the wake of a devastating hurricane-strength storm in the area on Saturday, Nikolov urged reporters to cover more actively the reality and events related to natural phenomena and cataclysms.
In his words, meteorological services should be pressed to issue timely early warnings about extreme weather events so that the local authorities could prepare and reduce the stress caused on people. Nikolov said that work on a broader information system to issue text or other warnings to the members of the public about looming extreme natural phenomena should be included in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
