Foreign Minister of the Republic of North Macedonia Bujar Osmani said that the opening of the Bulgarian Club named after King Boris III in Ohrid was "a provocation which is to the detriment of the Bulgarian community in the Republic of North Macedonia at a moment when the debate on constitutional amendments in the country is being opened".
Osmani said that the question was an internal issue for the Republic of North Macedonia given that such clubs are established by citizens of the country and are registered there according to the legislation of the Republic of North Macedonia.
A Bulgarian club named Tsar Boris III was opened in Ohrid on Friday amid a protest staged in front of the building housing the club.
Osmani said during a weekly briefing to the media, that "on the one hand, the right of association is inviolable and this is guaranteed by the constitution. Item 2 of the Convention of Protection of Minorities says that the association needs to take place in the spirit of tolerance, dialogue and friendship. Precisely this is at odds with the name of the club, King Boris III. This name neither matches nor supports friendship, but just the contrary, it is a cause for discord, which is why I consider it a provocation".
The Foreign Minister argued that willingly or not, someone "ruins the image of the Bulgarian community before the citizens of the Republic of North Macedonia and also before the international community".
