The intermodal transport corridor linking Thessaloniki, Kavala, Alexandroupolis, Burgas, Varna and Ruse will soon be not just an ambitious plan as Bulgaria and Greece are resolved to make it a reality, Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Policies and Transport and Communications Minister Hristo Aleksiev and Greek Infrastructure and Transport Minister Kostas Karamanlis concurred at a meeting in Greece on Thursday. Rail and road connectivity and cooperation between Bulgarian and Greek ports topped the agenda of the meeting, Aleksiev's ministry said.
A joint venture is to be set up to manage the intermodal connectivity project. Sofia and Athens will apply for European funding with a common application form. Aleksiev told his Greek counterpart that he had presented this idea in a conversation with European Transport Commissioner Adina-Ioana Valean.
The intermodal project will help to improve transport connectivity not just between Bulgaria and Greece but in the whole region. "Against the backdrop of Europe's changing transport and energy map, it will enable Ukraine's future rapid recovery and modernization. The transport corridor is an alternative to the Bosporus where the transit fees increased several fold this month," Aleksiev said.
Aleksiev's meeting with Karamanlis is part of the programme of a Bulgarian delegation visiting Athens. Economy and Industry Minister Nikola Stoyanov and Energy Minister Rossen Hristov also took part in the talks.
