Bulgarian Ambassador in Serbia Petko Doykov discussed here on Friday with the newly elected President of the Serbian National Assembly, Vladimir Orlic, economic cooperation, cooperation in the fields of infrastructure and energy, as well as the rights of the Bulgarian minority in Serbia, the Serbian National Assembly said.
Building the gas interconnector between Bulgaria and Serbia was highlighted as one of the priorities in bilateral cooperation, the press release said.
Ambassador Doykov said that Bulgaria counts on the Serbian side’s commitment to continue providing the necessary conditions for the Bulgarian national minority to exercise their political, cultural and educational rights in accordance with the best European practices. The Bulgarian Embassy said in a Facebook post that Bulgaria hopes that the current National Assembly in Belgrade will vote to reinstate Dimitrovgrad’s old historical name of Tsaribrod. The town, located in East Serbia, is home to a Bulgarian ethnic majority and is named after Bulgarian communist leader Georgi Dimitrov.
The two have also discussed the current situation in the region, including Kosovo.
Opportunities for increasing two-way trade were also on the meeting’s agenda. The huge potential of the tourism sector to contribute to the overall economic development of both countries and improving cooperation in this field, were also noted.
