site.btaProsecutor's Office Indicts Turkish Citizen for Smuggling Currency
The District Prosecutor's Office in Haskovo has charged O.B., 47 years old, Turkish citizen, as a defendant in summary proceedings for not fulfilling his obligation to declare in writing to the customs authorities the currency carried across the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint, which is external border to the European Union.
On December 13, a truck with Turkish registration driven by O.B. arrived at Kapitan Andreevo to leave Bulgaria in the direction of Turkiye. He was travelling from the United Kingdom to Iraq via Bulgaria. During an inspection officers from the Burgas Customs Directorate found in factory cavities GBP 79,100 in undeclared cash, distributed in 10 packages. The total amount of the undeclared cash is the Bulgarian equivalent of about BGN 180,408.
The accused O.B. was detained for up to 72 hours by order of the prosecutor supervising the case. The work on the case continues under the supervision and guidance of a prosecutor from the District Prosecutor's Office in Haskovo.
