Turkiye will build a monument to the Bulgarian border police officer Petar Bachvarov, who was shot dead on November 7 while patrolling the Bulgarian-Turkish border, Bulgarian National Assembly Chair Vezhdi Rashidov, told reporters in Turkiye on Monday.

This was confirmed by Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlut Cavusoglu during his meeting with Rashidov.

The monument will be located on the border between the two countries.

"What happened at the border is sad, a tragedy, a young man gone. We are all convinced that this was not politics but an accident," Rashidov said.

The Border Police officer, Sergeant Petar Bachvarov, was killed on November 7 while patrolling the border with Turkiye, near the village of Golyam Dervent. Two days later, the Turkish authorities arrested two brothers, one of whom confessed to shooting at Bachvarov from Turkish territory through a chink in the border fence.
