At a Tuesday briefing at the border crossing with Turkiye, Customs Agency Director Pavel Gerenski said that by the end of January 2023, two new planned truck lanes subject to official control by the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency will be completed and put into operation at the Kapitan Andreevo Border Checkpoint. Another additional route will also be financed as a backup for oversized loads or peak traffic.

Gerenski and Finance Minister Rositza Velkova inspected the construction works and a completed project for the drainage of the the Hayaz River.

The construction of the routes is two months ahead of schedule. At the same time, the critical traffic situation with neighboring Turkiye has already been overcome, added Gerensky. He specified that construction works are being carried out at two more locations at the checkpoint, which include the reconstruction of customs buildings and facilities. They should be finished by May next year.

In 2023 a  record heavy cargo traffic with Turkiye through Kapitan Andreevo is expected, which will reach nearly 1 million processed trucks at the entrance and exit, Gerenski pointed out. He noted that the new lanes are expected to increase the traffic flow by 20%, in addition to the improvement of the organization and the software.
