The Bulgarian municipality of Kardzhali was twinned with the municipality of Strumica in the Republic of North Macedonia, the office of MEP and co-chair of the European Liberals Ilhan Kyuchyuk announced on Wednesday. During a meeting in Strumica, new opportunities for cooperation and development of relations between the two municipalities were discussed. The twinning was initiated by Kyuchyuk.
Mayor of Strumica Kostadin Kostadinov said that the twinning with Kardzhali is a very important message to the citizens of the two countries. "Both Kardzhali and Strumica share the same values and I believe that the two municipalities have a good ground for the development of a long-term cooperation," he said.
According to Kyuchyuk, all ties and paths between nations are built with perseverance and good will. He commented that the two municipalities, although on opposite sides of the border, can successfully cooperate in many areas. "The point of politics is to make sure that in this complex time, citizens overcome their differences. This is a new page we are opening between our two countries and between our two municipalities," Kyuchyuk said after the meeting.
During the meeting, Kardzhali Municipality received an invitation to participate in the traditional carnival of Strumica.
Mayor of Kardzhali Hasan Azis also attended the talks. Later, the Bulgarian delegation, led by Kyuchyuk, held a meeting with former prime minister of North Macedonia Zoran Zaev.
