site.bta164,000 Illegal Migrants Intercepted at Elhovo Section of Bulgarian-Turkish Border in 2022

Working under huge migrant pressure, the Elhovo Regional Border Police Directorate foiled 164,000 attempts at entering Bulgaria from Turkiye illegally in 2022, the head of the Directorate General for Border Police, Rositsa Dimitrova, said on Friday while inspecting the border with Turkiye.

Dimitrova commented: "My colleagues have done a very good job, given their working conditions and the ease with which the border fence can be crossed. Their reactions and work are very professional."

The Elhovo border police recruited 21 technicians at the beginning of 2023, and another 39 are to be added, to repair parts of the border fence which have been compromised by trespassers, Dimitrova said.
