In 2023, Romania will deepen its bilateral relations with is strategically important European partners, including Bulgaria, it transpired from the annual meeting of Romanian President Klaus Iohannis with ambassadors accredited to his country. The event, held in the Cotroceni Palace, which is the Romanian head of State's residence, was attended by Bulgarian Ambassador in Bucharest Radko Vlaykov.
Iohannis outlined as priorities for this year the consolidated position on the Eastern Flank, promoting the strategic importance of the Black Sea and deepening the strategic partnership with the United States.
The Romanian President said that this year will not be an easy one and "will test our ability to respond to challenges, to keep our solidarity and, above all, stay united". Romania's response to the crisis, caused by Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine, will continue to be multidimensional and comprehensive. "We will continue to support Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, including their European and Euro Atlantic aspirations," Iohannis said.
The Romanian head of State also discussed Schengen. "2023 must be the year of joining Schengen. Romania is prepared from all standpoints. The country's place and that of its citizens is in the border-free area," he said.
