site.btaPM Donev: "State Budget Needs Reason"
It is time to come to reason when it is a matter of the national budget, caretaker Prime Minister Galab Donev said, speaking before Monday’s meeting of the Council of Ministers scheduled to discuss the extension of Budget 2022.
The Finance Ministry has drafted several scenarios, including a complete draft budget for 2023, and the government opted for the extension of the effect of the 2022 State Budget Act, or the so-called “extending bill”, Donev recalled.
Also, he underscored that the caretaker government does not have the parliamentary support required to offer "its own ideas and policies". "Curiously, some party leaders today peremptorily demand from us what they forbade us only three months ago. Moreover, we have legitimate concerns, confirmed by our experience last year, that in a highly fragmented parliament, the discussion and adoption of the budget could turn into electoral horse-trading. The price of such irresponsibility would be unaffordable for Bulgarian society. The consequences will be immediate and long-term in financial, economic and social terms," the Prime Minister said.
Donev expressed hope that the budget would not fall into a “prolonged parliamentary procedure”.
He jokingly compared the single item on the agenda of the government’s meeting to his own name in Bulgarian, as “galab” means “pigeon”.
The Government is discussing a draft law on the implementation of provisions of the 2022 State Budget Act, the 2022 Public Social Insurance Budget Act and the 2022 National Health Insurance Fund Budget Act..
Earlier in the day, the bill was discussed at an extraordinary meeting of the National Council for Tripartite Cooperation at which it did not receive the support of the trade unions.
