There has been a overwhelming increase in heavy truck traffic on Bulgarian roads of some 20% a year, particularly between the Kapitan Andreevo border control checkpoint on the Turkish border and the northern border crossings, caretaker Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev told reporters on Wednesday.
“We are not sure this heavy traffic is due to the war in Ukraine alone,” he added.
A lasting solution should cover all roads from Kapitan Andreevo to the northern border at Ruse and Vidin. As of August 16, trucks are stopped at parking lots across the country and are allowed to proceed in stages to prevent queuing around Ruse and Vidin, Demerdzhiev said.
Trucks will now be stopped by Svilengrad (Southern Bulgaria), while until now they had to wait at parking lots in Northern Bulgaria only. “We will cover the entire route from Svilengrad to the northern border,” the Interior Minister said.
