A man got a six-month suspended sentence for setting on fire the door of the Bulgarian Cultural Centre in Bitola. Lambe Alabakovski admitted to the arson before the court, his lawyer told Radio Free Europe.

His sentence will expire if he does not commit another offence in the next two years.

On June 4, 2022, Alabakovski poured gasoline on the front door of the Ivan Mihailov Cultural Centre in Bitola, set it on fire and ran away on a bicycle. He was arrested shortly after that, first in a remand centre and then in house arrest, before being released. He was later seen in the first days of protests in Skopje against a French proposal for steps towards a thaw in relations between Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia, that would pave the way to the start of Skopje's EU accession talks.
