site.btaMPs Voice Concern to Turkish Counterparts over Increasing Human Trafficking Across Border
The parliamentary committee on internal security and public order on Thursday held a joint sitting with the Committee on Internal Affairs of the Grand National Assembly of Turkiye. The meeting discussed the latest developments on the border with Turkiye, the migratory pressure and the cooperation between the two countries.
Committee chair Hamid Hamid expressed hope that the Turkish MPs will convey to Turkiye’s Parliament the concern of Bulgarian authorities over the migrant pressure and the increasing human trafficking. According to him, the random migratory wave has moved to another phase with refugees organized by human traffickers. Hamid said that intelligence data suggest that these are economic migrants and not people fleeing from war. He voiced hope that the Turkish authorities will increase police presence at the border and with common efforts the migratory pressure will be stemmed.
For the Turkish side, Celalettin Guvenc, chair of the Committee on Internal Relations, highlighted the possibilities to boost economic cooperation and efforts against crime and terrorism. According to him, the European Union can and should help both countries to develop infrastructure, especially along the border, in order to advance further economic relations between Bulgaria and Turkiye. According to him, this will help both countries and Europe.
“We know that we don’t have good legacy from the past but we want to leave good legacy for the coming generations,” concluded Guvenc.
On Friday the Turkish delegation will meet with National Assembly Chair Vezhdi Rashidov and Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev.
