Head of the Delegation of Bulgarian Socialists in the European Parliament and MEP Petar Vitanov met in Brussels on Tuesday with Zulfi Ismaili, the Ambassador-Designate of North Macedonia to the EU. The two discussed the assault on Hristian Pendikov, which took place in Ohrid, North Macedonia, on January 19.
Pendikov's injuries are treated at the Military Medical Academy in Sofia, after he was flown to Bulgaria on January 20.
Vitanov said, "I told Ambassador Ismaili that socialists are particularly sensitive to all hate crimes. Such serious incidents sabotage the work of politicians on both sides of the border and slow down the process of integration and friendship between our two countries".
Ismaili confirmed that his government also condemns the attack on Pendikov.
Vitanov said that his delegation will insist the Ohrid incident to be included in the annual enlargement report. The Bulgarian MEPs will ask the European Commission and the European Council about plans to address acts of violence against Bulgarians in the Republic of North Macedonia.
The meeting agenda also included transport connectivity between the two countries and Corridor VIII in particular, as this project is of strategic importance to both countries.
