site.btaFire Near Bulgaria-Greece Border Jumps Back into Bulgaria, Helicopter Joins Fire Fighting Efforts

A total of 311 firemen, servicemen, policemen, hunters and volunteers are trying to extinguish the wildfire on the Bulgarian-Greek border near Mt. Veykata in the territory of Kirkovo Municipality, the Interior Ministry’s Regional Directorate in Kardzhali said in a press release on Tuesday. The fire has been raging for some two weeks now.

Currently, the fire in Kirkovo municipality is under control, said the director of the regional fire service Commissioner Sergei Zaimov, quoted by the Bulgarian National Radio on Saturday. Zaimov added that a helicopter will be unable to join the firefighting efforts on Saturday due to poor weather conditions.

A two-week-old wildfire in Greece has crossed into Bulgaria at a second location Friday after it first jumped the border at Gorno Kapinovo a day earlier. The head of the local fire service in the southern town of Kurdjali, Sergei Zaimov, told BTA.
