A total of 311 firemen, servicemen, policemen, hunters and volunteers are trying to extinguish the wildfire on the Bulgarian-Greek border near Mt. Veykata in the territory of Kirkovo Municipality, the Interior Ministry’s Regional Directorate in Kardzhali said in a press release on Tuesday. The fire has been raging for some two weeks now.

The wildfire is contained and prevented from spreading over a larger area. That task was set by Nikolay Nikolov, Director of the General Directorate for Fire Safety and Civil Protection. However, the wildfire front still spreads over some 20 kilometres. The firefighters are using mainly hand tools to put out the flames.

A military helicopter is expected to re-join the fire-fighting efforts on Tuesday, the Interior Ministry added.
