Bulgaria will not give up the protection of the rights of its community in the Republic of North Macedonia, caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikolay Milkov told journalists.
He and his counterpart from the Republic of North Macedonia, Bujar Osmani, visited at Sofia’s Military Medical Academy the secretary of the King Boris III Bulgarian Cultural Centre in Ohrid, Hristian Pendikov, who was severely beaten on January 19.
“Bulgaria firmly insists that the perpetrators of this act and other similar acts be punished with the severity of the law so that this atmosphere of impunity, which breeds new and renewed violence, comes to an end,” Milkov said.
North Macedonia will make sure there is zero tolerance for violence as a response to any problem, least of all inter-ethnic life, Osmani told the news briefing. He said that his government will not allow anyone to insult the Bulgarian community there and the state will ensure this. He also stressed that this cycle of provocations and violence must be broken, on both sides.
Responding to a question about the perpetrators of the assault, Osmani said they have been identified, one of them has been arrested for 30 days and will be brought to justice, and the other perpetrators are still at large.
